Minutes from the 89th Annual Stroup/e Reunion
To Be Approved on Sunday, August 4, 2019


On Sunday, August 5, 2018 the descendants of Jacob Straub/Stroup held their
89th family reunion in the Family Life Center of the Alexis Baptist Church in Alexis, Gaston County, North Carolina.   All attendees were welcomed by Barbara Anne Stroupe Stegall, secretary in the absence of Reunion President Jim Stroupe. Pictures of 1) everyone and 2) attendees born a “Stroup/e” were taken at 1:00 p.m. followed by the covered dish luncheon.

Business Meeting called to order at 1:15pm by Secretary Barbara Anne Stegall.
Attendance this year:  86.  Minutes of the previous year’s Reunion (2017) were approved.  Acknowledgements:
- Mrs. Stegall introduced first-time attendees to the group.
- In his absence, a round of applause to Jim G. Stroupe of Winston-Salem for his service as reunion president, serving from 2013 - 2018 and Vice-President in 2012.  Thank You, Jim!
- A very special thanks to our local family members, Mike and Ruth Hipp; also Alan and Maria Hipp for their faithful service in setting up the center for the reunion each year.  We are looking for additional folks to take on the setup work, effective next year, 2019.

Officers Elected for 2018-2019:  President – Hank Stroup of Raleigh; Vice-President – Nancy Quesada of Austin Texas; Secretary – Barbara Anne Stroupe Stegall of Matthews; Treasurer – Maria Hipp of Alexis; and Family Historian – Mike Stroupe of Rock Hill, South Carolina.

History Committee Report:  Sid Stroupe of Durham spoke a bit about the large family posters along the walls around the room.  Also on display were documents and photos of early reunion years since 1927.  Sid recognized attendee Susan Ferguson Winstead of Cary, North Carolina for her enormous efforts to research and identify, with certainty, the 130 acres that Jacob’s son Daniel purchased in 1814.  At that time Daniel moved his family from the Stroup Settlement in Alexis to his new farm land, about 12 miles to the west, starting the “Cherryville Stroup/e” family/linage. 

90th Reunion – 2019 – Discussion.  Several persons volunteered to serve on a committee for developing a special celebration.  They are Marsha Hanna of Charlotte, Linda Moss Ballard of Cherryville and Carolyn Fogle Mullins of Panama City Beach Florida.

Mrs. Stegall adjourned the official business meeting at 1:50pm.

Traveling the farthest distance:  Robert Edwin Jr “Ed” and wife Mary Stroupe from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Eldest Lady:  Anne Abernathy Orren, age 93, from Tega Cay, SC.
Eldest Gentleman: Robert Edwin “Bob” Stroupe Sr, age 95, from Colfax, NC
Youngest Lady: Caroline Lynn Stroupe, daughter of Stephanie and Christopher Stroupe, Kannapolis.
Youngest Gentleman:  Matthias Rowan Stroupe, son of David W. and Natasha Stroupe, Jr. of Hayes, VA
Door prizes totaling $150 were presented to:  Mary Ann Stroupe of Aiken, SC, Carole Stroupe of Lilburn GA, Allen Chappell of Dallas, Patricia Ellis of Dallas and Carolyn Stroupe Stambaugh of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Deaths Reported:  August 2017-July 2018
Robert W. Stroupe, 80, of Mt. Washington, Kentucky died on August 15, 2017.
Ricky Wilson Stroupe, 59, 0f Dallas died on September 7, 2017.  Ricky was the son of Boyd L. Stroupe and Mary H. Stroupe of Dallas and a descendant of Jacob’s son Philip.
Jane McDonald Stroupe of Salem, SC passed on September 2, 2017.  She was married to Mark Stroupe, son of Judy and Jackie Stroupe of Stanley, North Carolina
Travis Justin Stroupe, 33, of Salem, SC died unexpectedly September 4, 2017.  A son of Mark Stroupe, step-son of Jane McDonald Stroupe and grandson of Judy and Jack Stroupe of Stanley, NC.  Descendant of Adam Stroup, Jacob’s eldest son.
Fred Louis Stroupe, 81, of Bessemer City, NC died September 13, 2017.  He was born to Fred Franklin and Eva Bess Stroupe of same city.  A long-time farmer, he descended from Jacob’s son Daniel.
Dr. Paul Archibald Stroup, 96, died September 29, 2017 of Charlotte.  Born August 20, 1921 to the Reverend Paul Archibald Stroup, Sr. and Macie Garrison Stroup.  A WWII Veteran, Dr. Stroup practiced dentistry in Charlotte for forty years.  He descended from Jacob’s son Michael Stroup.
Julia Etta Stroup Allran, age 85, of Cherryville, NC died September 15, 2017. She was the daughter of the late John Clifton and Alice B. Stroup.  Julia Etta treasured and proudly touted her Stroup family history.  Her only and last visit to our family reunion (a memorable event for her!) was in 2012.
Sandra Stroupe Mooney, age 73, died October 1, 2017 in Charlotte, NC. She was the only child of Charles Wesley Stroupe and Marjorie Hoyle Stroupe and descended from Philip.
Gloria Gay Stroup Jenkins, 78, of Kings Mountain, NC died on January 12, 2018. Her parents were the late David Augustus and Maude Epley Stroup and “Gay” descended from Daniel, through his son, Matthew Wallace Stroup.  Gay was a prolific family historian, specifically working to document the Stroup family descendants of Matthew Wallace.  She attended her first Alexis reunion several years ago and returned twice.
Kenneth Mauney, Jr., 64, Of Iron Station, NC died January 12, 2018. His parents were the late Kenneth L. Mauney, Sr. and Margie Ruth Stroupe Mauney.  Grandfather was Thomas Anderson Stroupe, descendant of Philip Stroup.  Kenny last attended the reunion in 2013.
Rebecca Harrelson Rhyne, age 97, died April 13, 2018.  Mrs. Rhynes’ great- grandmother was Nancy Tlitha Cuemimoody Stroup Harrelson (daughter of Daniel) of Cherryville.  “Aunt Becky”, as many affectionately knew her, conveyed a wealth of family history to others.  She will be missed.
Nellie Lewis Yates, 93, of Belmont, NC passed on May 10, 2018.  She was daughter of Corrie Pauline Stroupe Lewis and descended from Adam Stroup.  Mrs. Yates, a long-time resident of Washington DC, joined the US White House staff in 1954, serving under many administrations - Eisenhower through Jimmy Carter. 
Charles Durant Homesley, 78, of Cherryville, NC passed on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.  He was a great-grandson of Mary Stroup Homesley of same city.
