Mary Nette Link Stroup Obit

Mary Nette Link Stroup died in her home Friday, December 16, 2011, at the age of 93, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Stroup was born in Lincoln County on October 25, 1918, daughter of Edgar Round Link and Mattie Camp Link. On Christmas Day, 1937, she married Chauncey Depew Stroup, Jr., and worked as a beautician while he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Her bright smile was a familiar sight in Lincolnton, and she was known for the great care she took of anyone who needed it, bringing meals and comfort to relatives, friends, and strangers alike. After they were grown, her children would hear stories of their mother’s generosity from people they had never met. Mrs. Stroup also volunteered for many years for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile, Christian Ministries, and Meals on Wheels.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a wonderful cook, and a talented seamstress. Her crib quilts and pillows will be treasured for generations by numerous families throughout Lincoln County. She will be remembered by her family for her kindness, grace, strength, and subtle humor, not to mention her fried okra.

Mrs. Stroup is predeceased by Robert Edgar Link, Ruth Link Jonas, Josephine Link Rozzelle, Annie Link Alexander, William Ray Link, Betty Link Beverly, Andrew Link, Louise Link Bumgardner, and Mildred Link. She is survived by Mrs. C.D. Stroup, Sr. (Sarah); her son, Chauncey Depew Stroup, III (Chip), of Lincolnton; her daughter, Mary Susan Tiller of Georgetown, South Carolina; six grandchildren: Jennifer Alise Drew of Los Angeles, California; Kristin Kelly Stroup of Washington, D.C., and Liberia, West Africa; Jess Will Stroup of Los Angeles, California; Braden Daniel Stroup of Denver, Colorado; Robert Kenneth Williams, Jr., of Charleston, South Carolina; Matthew Wilson Williams of New York, New York; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lincolnton on Tuesday, December 20, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the North Addition of the church immediately following the service. The family will then proceed to Hollybrook Cemetery for the burial service.
